Spies leads Indianapolis warm-up as Stoner is declared fit

Sunday, 19 August 2012

Yamaha Factory Racing’s Ben Spies set the fastest time during warm-up for the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix ahead of Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo, as injured Casey Stoner is declared fit for the race.

Spies, who also suffered a big crash yesterday, was on top form this morning, putting in a lap faster than his qualifying one. Yet the story of the morning was Repsol Honda Team’s Stoner, who was out on track lapping sixth fastest with a fracture and torn ligaments in his right ankle after a monstrous highside yesterday. He was declared fit by doctors before the morning practice and spent almost all of the session out on track slowly chipping away at his lap time. According to Livio Suppo, HRC’s Communications and Marketing Director, Stoner had only taken some painkilling tablets, foregoing the frequently used injection. The Australian was however wearing a specially constructed boot for his heavily swollen ankle.

His teammate and tomorrow’s pole sitter Dani Pedrosa set the second fastest time of the morning, as he hopes to claw back points on Yamaha’s Lorenzo in this afternoon’s race. Lorenzo, who has not looked entirely comfortable at the Brickyard went third quickest, ahead of Monster Yamaha Tech 3 duo Cal Crutchlow and Andrea Dovizioso. Top CRT bike was Power Electronics Aspar’s Aleix Espargaró in tenth.
