Lorenzo hunting down 40th victory at Jerez

Monday, 23 April 2012

After taking the first win of the 2012 season under the floodlights of Qatar, Yamaha Factory Racing´s Jorge Lorenzo will be looking to not only extend his championship lead at a track where he has won the last two consecutive races, but also take his total Grand Prix wins to an even 40.

The Mallorcan will be arriving at the Gran Premio bwin de España in a confident mood following his first ever win at the Losail circuit in the premier class, and the first ever win of the new 1000cc era. The Andalucian circuit, featuring quick direction changes and some hard braking points, has seen Lorenzo take the checkered flag four times in his career with two successive 250cc wins in 2006 and 2007 and two premier class victories in 2010 and 2011. He also finished the official MotoGP™ pre-season test in March in second place just marginally behind 2011 World Champion, Repsol Honda´s Casey Stoner.

Lorenzo comments: “I’m very excited to be coming back to Jerez again. We were very strong here in our test and I have always had good results. The competition will be tough; I expect Casey and especially Dani to be very fast. Qatar was a perfect start to our season; we worked very hard for that incredible victory. Now we get to race in front of our home fans, I will try to make sure we make a good show for them! Let’s hope it doesn’t rain this year!”

Lorenzo´s team manager Wilco Zeelenberg adds: “I’m looking forward to Jerez, it’s always a great event with a lot of spectators. Jorge has won two years in a row; our aim is to make it three! After Qatar we are very confident with the package, with the hard work of the team and with Jorge’s performance. We’re looking forward to Friday to start again.”

If Lorenzo manages to take the win at the 4.423km circuit, it would mark his 40th win across all Grand Prix classes, equaling Casey Stoner´s record. Currently on par with nine-times champion, Italian Carlo Ubbiali, Lorenzo is the second most successful Spanish rider of all-time in terms of Grand Prix victories after Angel Nieto.
