Moto2™ and Moto3™ set for final pre-season showdown

Moto2™ and Moto3™ set for final pre-season showdown

With the opening round of the 2013 season for the Moto2™ and Moto3™ classes in Qatar less than a month away, the feeder classes are set for one final showdown as they descend on Jerez next Monday for the four-day official test.

Most significant for the Moto2™ class is that all bikes will start the test with the official specification Honda 600cc engine, unlike in previous tests, where there may well have been discrepancies between teams. Nonetheless Tuenti HP 40’s Pol Espargaró will start the test as favourite, after dominating the last outing at the Jerez track. And it will be the Kalex riders in general that will look to assert their dominance once more, with the likes of Marc VDS Racing Team’s Scott Redding, Italtrans Racing Team’s Julián Simón and his teammate Takaaki Nakagami having set expectations high with their performances so far.

The Mapfre Aspar Team Moto2 duo of Nico Terol and Jordi Torres will however be doing their upmost to put their Suter chassis towards the sharp end, with both having impressed in previous outings. Came IodaRacing Project’s Johann Zarco will aim to build on his strong rookie season last year and continue to improve his new Suter, while the NGM Mobile Forward Racing team, now on Speed Up chassis, will hope to make a big impact with their four-strong team. JiR Moto2’s Mike Di Meglio is tasked with continuing his lone work with his MotoBI machine, as is Idemitsu Honda Team Asia’s Yuki Takahashi with his Moriwaki.

The Moto2™ grid also has a number of exciting rookies to look out for, such as Tech 3 Racing duo Danny Kent and Louis Rossi, who will aim to get to grips with the Mistral 610, and Dynavolt Intact GP Racing’s Sandro Cortese, last year’s Moto3™ World Champion.

Fighting for that particular title this year will be a whole host of exciting young talent, who will all be looking to squeeze the most out of their 250cc four-stroke machines in their final days in Jerez. Team Calvo’s Maverick Viñales, now with a new team and KTM bike, has looked rejuvenated after his difficult end to last season, and is still the man to beat. Yet Estrella Galicia 0,0’s Alex Rins and Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Luis Salom will be hoping to claw back some tenths in next week’s outing as they also look to clinch their first ever title this year.

However with Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3’s Jonas Folger, and two new-spec Mahindras with Miguel Oliveira and Efrén Vázquez, that task will prove difficult. In addition to this, San Carlo Team Italia’s Romano Fenati will hope to get the same kind of start he did last year in his rookie season, though for that, he will have to dial in his FTR-Honda further, which has so far looked off the pace from the KTMs. And the Jerez test will also be an important setting for the numerous rookies joining the field, such as Kiefer Racing’s Red Bull MotoGP Rookie champion Florian Alt, Marc VDS Racing Team’s Livio Loi, and Team Calvo’s Ana Carrasco.

The test commences on Monday the 18th from 13:20 CET and will end on Thursday the 21st at 13:20 CET. It will consist of a mix of joint running sessions, as well as sole outings for both the Moto2™ and Moto3™ classes. Stay tuned to for all the official lap times, session reports, video highlights and rider interviews.
