Folger on top as testing resumes at Jerez

Folger on top as testing resumes at Jerez

Jonas Folger set the initial pace as Moto3™ pre-season testing continued in Spain on Monday. The Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3 rider lapped the Circuito de Jerez in 1’47.149, leading Estrella Galicia 0,0’s Alex Rins and Team Calvo’s Maverick Viñales.

The day’s weather was ideal, with the rain and fog of the last Jerez test having been replaced by clear blue skies. The return of showers is a strong possibility for Tuesday, though, resulting in somewhat frenetic track action for this opening half-day period.

The majority of the day was spent focussing on bike setup, concentrating on riding styles and pace – not least as few have new parts to sample this week. Moto3 was the first class to hit the track but, despite the idyllic conditions, all suffered from a distinct lack of grip as cars had been running on the Andalucian circuit 24 hours earlier.

Both Rins and Viñales ran new components. The former concentrated on rear end grip, with a lack of it currently preventing him from posting consistent lap times despite a solid one-lap pace. In the case of the latter – who had been quickest at the last Jerez test - the biggest issues are chatter in fast corners and braking; should sufficient chassis work be carried out this week, Viñales targets a race simulation run on Thursday provided conditions enable the target to become a reality.

Fourth-placed Luis Salom was the leading Red Bull KTM Ajo runner, edging out Ambrogio Racing’s Brad Binder and Danny Webb who sandwiched Mahindra Racing’s Miguel Oliveira into sixth position. Jack Miller and Alex Márquez also cemented top ten placings for Caretta Technology-RTG and Estrella Galicia 0,0, respectively. Romano Fenati carried his San Carlo Team Italia FTR chassis to tenth place; boosted by a new Honda engine, the Italian insists that the added power will be paramount in moving closer to KTM.

Jerez’s first full day of the week will come on Tuesday, with a running slot of 10am to 6pm local time (CET) divided up between Moto2™ and Moto3™.
