Rossi and Márquez: A public trading of pleasantries

Rossi and Márquez: A public trading of pleasantries

The world motorcycling icon and the rookie who could one day become the world motorcycling icon. Ahead of the season-opening MotoGP™ race, Valentino Rossi and Marc Márquez have shared plenty of mutual respect on Twitter.

Following the conclusion of Jerez testing, the real challenges of 2013 are just around the corner – starting with next week’s Commercial Bank Grand Prix of Qatar. It’s set to be an event packed with intrigue, as experienced faces with something to prove go head-to-head with fearless newcomers. Whatever your own focal point, it’s impossible to avoid the conclusion that Rossi’s return to Yamaha and Márquez’s climb to the top class will be key stories throughout the year.

The respect between the pair has been evident for some time and is only building now that the duo are poised to share the race track. The first to send a message (in no more than 140 characters) was the reigning Moto2™ World Champion. ‘What fun it is to follow Vale, learning how he rides,’ Márquez typed in Texas, also tweeting a photo of himself in the wake of the legendary ‘46’. On that occasion, the Spaniard earned a ‘retweet’ from the nine-time world champion. Last Monday, during the Jerez test, it was the Italian’s turn to reply to the rookie. ‘How am I doing?’ he jokingly asked, enclosing an image in which he was tackling a corner while an elbow scraped along the asphalt – perhaps suggesting the teacher does have a favourite student.

There is now just a matter of days between Rossi, Márquez and the start of the 2013 season at Losail. Whether the next cyber dialogue comes in the form of advice, congratulations or regret, we shall soon find out. Or perhaps they’ll be able to converse face-to-face on the Qatar podium…
