Moto3™ blasts back into action under floodlights

Moto3™ blasts back into action under floodlights

It may be the smallest category in the World Championship, but Moto3™ carries the responsibility of launching the season at Losail this weekend. The Commercial Bank Grand Prix of Qatar is the first race in which Sandro Cortese’s title is up for grabs.

For the second year of Moto3™, which replaced the 125 class in 2012, those in contention for the vacant crown include Team Calvo’s Maverick Viñales and Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Luis Salom; both of whom have demonstrated flashes of brilliance over the pre-season period. Unfortunately for the former, he lost a fingertip after a crash in Jerez testing and so fully adapting to his injury will take some time.

Another Spaniard looking for a title challenge is Álex Rins, riding the KTM of Estrella Galicia 0,0 alongside Álex Márquez – brother of MotoGP™ debutant Marc. At Mapfre Aspar Team, Jonas Folger is in need of a consistent campaign but insists that he is adopting a race-by-race strategy as opposed to constant title planning.

Romano Fenati also has good reason to be confident, riding an FTR-Honda which sets him aside from rivals mentioned so far. The San Carlo Team Italia rider enjoyed a strong start to last season – finishing second at Losail – and is now on the lookout for further success as the track welcomes the MotoGP fraternity for the tenth time.

Perhaps a little further down the order, the pack is swarming with an array of new faces; some threatening to challenge in the same team, such as Jack Miller and John McPhee who join forced at Caretta Technology-RTG. India’s Mahindra Racing are also keen to make an impression, one day hoping to climb to the top tier of the sport; they field Spaniard Efrén Vázquez alongside Portugal’s Miguel Oliveira. Sharing the same level of enthusiasm is Red Bull’s Zulfahmi Khairuddin, aiming for regular rostrum finishes after so narrowly missing out on a win at Sepang last year.

On Thursday, the Moto3™ riders will be the first to sample Losail this season. All of the action can be followed live on
