Salom pinpoints testing as key to victory

Sunday night saw Spain’s Luis Salom become the maiden Moto3™ winner of the 2013 season in a dramatic encounter under lights in Qatar. After the race, he claimed that efficient pre-season testing was a major factor in his success.

The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider emerged from a multiple-rider battle at exactly the right moment, timing a late-race overtaking maneuver to perfection before pulling out a sizeable gap to defend his position over the final of 18 laps.

“I think we have made a great job this weekend but also in testing – and this is the result,” the 21-year-old told “Now we need to stay really happy, but this is a good start to the season with the new team, with Red Bull and with KTM. It’s really great for me.”

Salom will now head to Austin, Texas for Round 2 of the campaign.

“We’ll try our best and see the result after that, but we can only do our best – nothing more than that is possible,” he summed up.

The Palma de Mallorca rider now carries a five-point championship lead over compatriot Maverick Viñales, who finished second on Sunday evening.
