Rins on top in final Texas practice session

Rins on top in final Texas practice session

Estrella Galicia 0,0’s Alex Rins set the pace in third practice for the Moto3™ class at Circuit of the Americas. The Spaniard headed compatriots Luis Salom and Maverick Viñales, of Red Bull KTM Ajo and Team Calvo respectively.

With 40 minutes available on Saturday morning, this was the riders’ final chance to gain critical mileage ahead of this afternoon’s qualifying session. Grip levels were again low, not least as the session began at 9am and the track was yet to warm up.

Rins’ leading lap time at the new venue was 2’17.062, having improved at the end of the session to see off the challenge of Viñales, only for Salom to then slot into second position. The lack of track temperature was a prime reason for large disparities in lap times throughout the 32-rider field.

Efren Vazquez and Romano Fenati – who had been the initial pace-setter yesterday – were fourth and fifth for Mahindra Racing and San Carlo Team Italia, ahead of Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3’s Jonas Folger who had been bumped down from the top three. Redox RW Racing GP’s Jakub Kornfeil, Ajo’s Arthur Sissis, Avant Tecno’s Niklas Ajo and Ognetta-Centro Seta Isaac Viñales rounded out the top ten.

Two riders ran into trouble during the session, as Francesco Bagnaia lost control of his Team Italia bike at penultimate corner Turn 19 and Rins’ teammate Alex Marquez suffered a small fall, but was also able to rejoin the session.

The Moto3™ Qualifying session for the 2013 Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas gets underway at 12:35pm local time (GMT -5).
