Viñales pips Rins in pre-race warm-up

Maverick Viñales posted a last-gasp lap to deny Alex Rins the top spot in the Moto3™ pre-race warm-up at Circuit of the Americas.

Team Calvo rider Viñales moved ahead on his final tour, demoting this afternoon’s pole-sitter to second place. Jack Miller was third for Caretta Technology – RTG as championship leader Luis Salom fell.

Rins had looked set for a perfect start to race day, having yesterday achieved his second pole position after Jerez last year. The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider managed a best effort of 2’17.419, but was demoted by Viñales who posted 2’17.308 as the chequered flag flew. With Miller in third spot, Salom finished sixth but was highly aggravated to have been involved in a collision with RW Racing GP’s Jasper Iwema, with the former having contacted with his rival which resulted in a lowside accident.

Mahindra Racing’s Miguel Oliveira and Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3’s Jonas Folger moved ahead of Salom to fourth and fifth in the last moments, as Ambrogio Racing’s Danny Webb, the aforementioned Iwema, Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Zulfahmi Khairuddin and Estrella Galicia 0,0’s Alex Marquez rounded out the top ten.

Unable to run in this session - and for the rest of the weekend - was La Fonte Tascaracing’s Hyuga Watanabe, who was transported to hospital with a back injury following an accident in qualifying on Saturday.

Sunday afternoon’s Moto3™ race for the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas begins at 11am local time (GMT -5), preceding the Moto2™ and MotoGP™ events.
