Salom tops opening practice in Spain

Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Luis Salom led opening practice as Moto3™ kicked off proceedings for the Gran Premio bwin de España. The Spaniard, joint on points atop the championship with Alex Rins, easily went under the lap record as he led Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3’s Jonas Folger and GO&FUN Gresini Moto3’s Niccolo Antonelli.

With only 40 minutes on offer, the track was as packed as usual while the field of up and coming youngsters strived to learn as much as possible. Track conditions were yet to reach their optimum on this somewhat overcast morning but were at least dry, unlike they had been for much of the weekend 12 months ago.

Salom, winner of this year’s opening race in Qatar, set the pace with a best effort of 1’48.443. This saw off Folger’s own best by almost three tenths of a second, but no less than 13 riders all managed to beat Moto3’s best ever lap of Jerez courtesy of the marked improvement in conditions when compared to those of last year.

Behind Antonelli, the top five was rounded out by Avant Tecno’s Niklas Ajo and Estrella Galicia 0,0’s aforementioned Rins. Team Calvo’s Maverick Viñales was sixth, riding at the Andalucian track for the first time since the pre-season testing crash which left him injured just before the start of the new campaign.

Red Bull KTM Ajo duo Zulfahmi Khairuddin and Arthur Sissis were next up in seventh and eighth spots, unable to match teammate Salom’s pace on this occasion, as Mahindra Racing pair Efren Vazquez and Miguel Oliveira completed the top ten.

The second Moto3™ practice session starts at 1:10pm local time (GMT +2).
