Rabat back on top in Spain

Rabat back on top in Spain

Esteve Rabat led a Tuenti HP 40 one-two in final Moto2™ practice for the Gran Premio bwin de España. The Spaniard, who had also been quickest in the opening session on Friday, was ahead of the two 2013 race winners to date: teammate Pol Espargaro and Mapfre Aspar Team Moto2’s Nico Terol.

As the few clouds blocking out the sun began to move over at the Circuito de Jerez, Rabat was the only rider to move through the 1’43.000 threshold thanks to his best lap time of 1’42.967. This was two tenths quicker than Espargaro and could potentially have been even quicker, as demonstrated by Rabat on the first half of his last in-lap.

With Terol third, championship leader Scott Redding was fourth for Marc VDS Racing Team, ahead of Italtrans Racing Team’s Takaaki Nakagami and Blusens Avintia’s Toni Elias. Second Aspar rider Jordi Torres managed seventh spot and was the last rider to finish within a second of the top time.

With Desguaces La Torre SAG’s Marcel Schrotter eighth, Redding’s teammate Mika Kallio finished in ninth position but suffered a scare as he fell and slid into the Dry Sack gravel trap towards the end of the session. Dominique Aegerter was tenth for Technomag carXpert, having raced to fourth place last time out in Texas.

Moto2™ Qualifying for the 2013 Gran Premio bwin de España will start at 3:05pm local time (GMT +2). So far this season, the pole-sitters in Qatar and Texas have been Pol Espargaro and Scott Redding for Tuenti HP 40 and Marc VDS Racing Team.
