Viñales ahead in pre-race Warm-Up

Viñales ahead in pre-race Warm-Up

Team Calvo’s Maverick Viñales topped the Moto3™ timesheets for the first time this weekend as the Warm-Up session took place in Jerez on Sunday morning. Jonas Folger finished second for Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3, with this afternoon’s pole-sitter Alex Rins rounding out the top three for Estrella Galicia 0,0.

Viñales, this weekend returning to the Circuito de Jerez for the first time since the pre-season testing accident which left him with an injured right hand, went quickest in the early stages and remained up front when the chequered flag flew courtesy of a personal best lap time of 1’47.999. He will start the race from second position.

Folger had been towards the sharp end all weekend until qualifying, managing no more than seventh on the grid, but is looking to improve his pace heading towards this afternoon’s 23-lap race. Behind Rins, Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Luis Salom (who will start on the front row) and Rins’ teammate Alex Marquez completed the top five.

Mapfre’s Eric Granado took a trip through the gravel trap in the closing stages and there were falls for Alessandro Tonucci (La Fonte Tascaracing) and Niklas Ajo (Avant Tecno), but both riders escaped unharmed.

The Moto3™ Gran Premio bwin de España will be the opening race of the day, starting at 11am local time (GMT +2).
