Espargaro on top at start of home weekend

Pol Espargaro has finished quickest in the first Moto2™ practice session ahead of his home Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya. The Tuenti HP 40 rider displaced Interwetten Paddock Moto2 Racing’s Tom Luthi with just four minutes to go, as Alex de Angelis finished third for NGM Mobile Forward Racing.

Weather conditions were ideal as the action got underway, with Luthi heading the timesheets for much of the session before Espargaro posted his best effort of 1’46.985, beating the Swiss rider by just under two tenths of a second. Behind third-placed de Angelis, Technomag carXpert’s Dominique Aegerter and Came Iodaracing Project’s Johann Zarco rounded out the top five while Marc VDS Racing Team’s championship-leading Scott Redding ended the period in eighth position.

As had been the case in the preceding MotoGP™ session, a selection of riders ran wide at the La Caixa corner on entry to the stadium section; Esteve Rabat (Tuenti HP 40), Steven Odendaal (Argiñano & Gines Racing), Takaaki Nakagami (Italtrans Racing Team), Yuki Takahashi (IDEMITSU Honda Team Asia) and Doni Tata Pradita (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2) all took trips through the gravel trap, whereas QMMF Racing Team’s Anthony West suffered a small crash at Turn 5.

Moto2™ continues with second free practice from 3:05pm local time (GMT +2).
