Salom heads opening Barcelona practice

Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Luis Salom topped the timesheets as free practice launched the Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya on Friday morning. The Spaniard led championship-leading compatriot Maverick Viñales of Team Calvo and Miguel Oliveira for Mahindra Racing.

As a quiet session culminated with a sudden dropping in lap times across the closing minutes, Salom led the way with his best lap time of 1’52.054. This proved to be eight tenths of a second quicker than Viñales on a very warm morning at the Montmelo track, as Oliveira went third in the lack knockings. This pushed Caretta Technology – RTG’s Jack Miller down to fourth after suffering a small fall at Turn 5, as Isaac Viñales (cousin of Maverick) completed the top five for Ongetta-Centro Seta.

Estrella Galicia 0,0 pairing Alex Rins and Alex Marquez – who earlier this week viewed the circuit from the air – filled slots six and seven from Marc VDS Racing Team rookie Livio Loi, Redox RW Racing GP’s Jakub Kornfeil and Ambrogio Racing’s Brad Binder. In the final seconds, La Fonte Tascaracing’s Hyuga Watanabe became the second crasher but also walked away from the scene.

The second Moto3™ practice session commences at 1:10pm local time (GMT +2).
