Pedrosa destroys record en route to pole

Repsol Honda Team’s Dani Pedrosa has begun his 200th Grand Prix weekend in the finest possible fashion, convincingly setting the fastest ever MotoGP™ lap of Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya.

The impressive lap time of 1’40.893 was sixth tenths of a second faster than closest challenger Cal Crutchlow (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) and in the process dipped underneath Casey Stoner’s previous best of five years ago (1’41.186 for Ducati Team and achieved in an era of qualifying tyres).

"I am very happy because we put in a great lap and took a great qualifying time," Pedrosa said after the session. "It was a fantastic pole position for me. We also broke the circuit record and were able to do so in front of the home fans. I am also happy about improving our race pace, as this is the most important thing. We hope to put on a good show tomorrow and take full advantage of the front row start."

Pedrosa heads the championship moving into his home event; now poised to start his 200th Grand Prix, his debut was made in the 125 class in 2001.
