Marquez and Pedrosa second and fifth

Repsol Honda Team riders will occupy the middle grid positions of the first and second rows at Assen on Saturday, with Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa having qualified in second and fifth places in a dramatic qualifying session.

Marquez is inside the top three of qualifying for the first time since Le Mans and Friday’s result confirms his fourth front row start of the campaign to date. It comes following a heavy accident in Friday’s morning practice session, which resulted in bruising as well as fractures to a finger and toe.

"For me, to be here is so important and to finish on the front row is even more important because I didn’t expect it," comments the 20-year-old 2013 rookie. "Before FP4 I had big pain with my finger, the foot and the back. I think it will be even worse tomorrow but, anyway, I feel so good on the bike.

"We will see how I can manage the situation over the 26 laps in the race tomorrow and we will also see whether it is wet or dry. Anyway, I think we are quite good in both conditions; we just need to check how my physical condition will be tomorrow."

Championship leader Pedrosa was on provisional pole position before crashed at De Bult corner with six and a half minutes remaining in Q2. Having dropped back to fifth position, he explained his situation ahead of the race on Saturday:

"We haven't had any sessions that have really been good for putting in laps and trying out things with the bike. The conditions of the track and the weather haven't really allowed us to improve the setup because we've had very few laps on a completely dry track. However, in qualifying we were able to run a faster pace than in the rest of the practice sessions. Despite the crash, the feeling is a lot better than it was yesterday, so we will see if tomorrow we can get a good start and have a strong race."

In the BMW M Award which will reward the season’s best qualifier by the end of the campaign, Pedrosa has now drawn level on points with leader Jorge Lorenzo.
