Salom leads opening practice in Germany

Moto3™ championship leader Luis Salom has topped the first practice session ahead of the eni Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland. On an overcast morning, the Red Bull KTM Ajo rider led Estrella Galicia 0,0’s Alex Rins and Team Calvo’s Maverick Viñales.

The top three in the standings were the top three in the session, albeit in a slightly different order. Salom set the pace with a lap time of 1’28.069 (the fastest Moto3 lap of the Sachsenring to date), edging out a late lap from Rins by less than one tenth of a second. Viñales was third as Rins’ teammate Alex Marquez and Redox RW Racing GP’s Jakub Kornfeil completed the top five.

Three riders had incidents, as Spain’s Juanfran Guevara (CIP Moto3), Italy’s Niccolo Antonelli (GO&FUN Gresini Moto3) and Finland’s Niklas Ajo (Avant Techno) all suffered falls. A total of 35 riders took part, including wildcards Luca Amato (Mahindra Spiel-Kiste) and Kevin Hanus (Thomas Sabo GP Team) plus Jules Danilo, who covers for the injured Danny Webb at Ambrogio Racing.

Second Moto3™ practice starts at 1:10pm local time (GMT +2).
