Kenny Roberts on Marc Marquez and possible MotoGP™ return

Kenny Roberts on Marc Marquez and possible MotoGP™ return

Speaking ahead of the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix, racing legend 'King' Kenny Roberts caught up with to discuss the current championship, rookie sensation Marc Marquez and a possible return to the paddock.

Roberts, who took the title in his first-ever premier class season in 1978, believes that Marquez has brought another edge to the MotoGP™ championship: "Of course it’s interesting. I’ve watched it all my life. And I think Marquez has added something to it that’s a little bit different. So yeah, I enjoy it.

"Well, [he’s] outstanding. He obviously knows most of the race tracks and he’s bringing something to it that hasn’t been brought. So, a bunch of corner speed - with the kind of era you’re going through now, it’s working extremely well. I think he’s going to have quite an interesting second half."

However he is not ruling out reigning World Champion Jorge Lorenzo: "I wouldn’t count Jorge out any time. What he did at Assen was unbelievable. I mean, of all the race tracks to have a broken collarbone two days before the event, and ride it and actually do what he did, was outstanding – it was amazing really. I thought maybe he would be back for Laguna – he obviously proved me wrong, so I don’t think you can ever count him out. He was just so headstrong, so determined to win the race, and I think it’s going to be a very, very interesting next half of the season."

Roberts also spoke about a possible return to the paddock once more with a team of his own – and was keen to point out that things will not be done in halves: "We’re working on it. And we’re working on something quite big – it’s going to happen or it’s not going to happen. It’s not going to be almost there. When we come back we’ll come back in a big way! And if you don’t see me, you’ll know we didn’t get it done.

"It’s getting to the point where 2014’s maybe tough, but again…if it’s a big way, we can probably get it done. Any longer than the next month or so, I don’t think it’s possible for ‘14."
