Marquez leads in opening Silverstone practice

Championship leader Marc Marquez has topped the first MotoGP™ practice session ahead of the Hertz British Grand Prix at Silverstone. The Repsol Honda Team rider led the way from Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo and Monster Yamaha Tech3’s Cal Crutchlow, a favourite with the British crowd this weekend.

The British round of the World Championship is being run later this year, having been shifted from its previous June date to a new August/September slot. There were spots of rain in the preceding Moto3™ session, but the track remained completely dry for the premier class runners. Marquez topped the timesheets with 2’03.816, two tenths up on both Lorenzo and Crutchlow as teammate Dani Pedrosa and GO&FUN Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista completed the top five. Lorenzo’s teammate Valentino Rossi was sixth, having moved up on his final lap of the 45-minute session.

For the first time since 2010, MotoGP™ has reverted to Silverstone’s National Straight pit lane complex this weekend; this has allowed organisers to group all World Championship classes in one paddock. Free Practice 2, also lasting for 45 minutes, will begin at 2:05pm local time (GMT +1).
