'I thought I had pole,' admits Lorenzo

Jorge Lorenzo believed he would be starting the Hertz British Grand Prix from pole position, only for chief rival Marc Marquez to snatch it away from him in the closing moments of Saturday’s dramatic qualifying session at Silverstone.

Lorenzo was first to beat Casey Stoner’s qualifying record of 2011, then going even quicker after Marquez briefly moved ahead. The last laugh would go to the current championship leader, as the Repsol Honda Team rider’s final effort of 2’.00.691 demoted the champion by a tenth of a second.

"I thought I had pole position," began Yamaha Factory Racing’s Lorenzo, "but when I saw the classification I again saw that Marc was in front of me, so I was a bit disappointed because I had done one of the best laps of my whole career.

"I tried my best but again it wasn’t possible. Anyway, it is only qualifying, so second place is a good position and the important thing is tomorrow. It is going to be a long race, so let’s hope to have good pace to fight for victory."

Pole for Lorenzo would have been his third of 2013 and first since Jerez. Although the Mallorcan has missed out on Saturday’s top spot, he heads into race day with the knowledge that he has won two of his three premier class races at Silverstone.
