Smith left to lament tyre choice

Bradley Smith rode to ninth position in his home Hertz British Grand Prix at Silverstone. On reflection, the English MotoGP™ rookie believes more would have been possible had he made a different call regarding tyres.

Ahead of the 20-lap encounter, Smith elected to use the softer option rear Bridgestone but, with the benefit of hindsight, now admits this was the wrong decision.

"I was very pleased with my start and we decided to race with the softer rear tyre option, as we were lacking a bit of grip during the whole weekend," explained the Oxford rider, who now resides in Andorra. "I wanted the sun to come out but unfortunately the temperatures remained cold and after just three laps we already knew that the race would be a difficult one.

"Probably the harder tyre would have been the right choice, but we did not have enough time to evaluate it (on Saturday). We did what we could and, even if I didn’t want to finish behind Nicky (Hayden), I decided it was safer the finish the race after Andrea (Dovizioso) crashed out just in front of me. All in all, it has been a tough weekend but riding in front of nearly 75,000 British fans has been an incredible feeling."

Silverstone brought an equally difficult weekend for Monster Yamaha Tech3 teammate Cal Crutchlow, who dropped to seventh from a front row start following no less than three crashes over the course of the weekend.
