Aspar retains Torres for 2014

Aspar Team Moto2 has announced that Jordi Torres will be remaining with the squad for a further season in the intermediate class in 2014.

Catalan Torres has enjoyed a strong campaign to date in 2013, with the highlight being his maiden career victory and podium finish at the Sachsenring. At present, he trails teammate Nico Terol – the 125 class World Champion of 2011 – by only four points.

“We are really pleased that we’ll have Jordi with us again next season,” says team owner Jorge Martinez ‘Aspar’. “He has been Spanish champion and European champion in recent seasons and has taken a big step forward in the World Championship this year.

“With the potential he is showing, I’m sure that we will see him fighting for the podium on a regular basis next year and he could fight for the Moto2 title. We have seen his winning potential in races this year. Obviously, he won at the Sachsenring, and has shown great pace at other rounds too.”

Torres adds that staying with the Valencia-based outfit was always his target.

“It was a clear objective for me to stay with the Mapfre Aspar Team,” the 26-year-old comments. “I’m really happy about this as we work hard together and that means we are constantly developing, I’m very comfortable here. The deciding factor when I signed to stay was the technical staff, the people involved at a technical level.

“The understanding I have with the mechanics and the atmosphere in our team helps us to improve every day. My crew chief has great knowledge, so I’m learning a lot. Also the team setup is really professional. My aim is to keep improving and get more experience with the bike. I want to thank the team and Jorge for giving me this new opportunity.”

2014 will mark Torres’ fourth campaign in Moto2™, excluding the single race in which he competed to make his World Championship debut, in Barcelona in 2010.
