Luca Marini: ‘Aiming to learn from the best’

Luca Marini: ‘Aiming to learn from the best’

A new face will grace the Moto3™ grid at Misano this weekend as Luca Marini, half-brother of nine-time World Champion Valentino Rossi, competes as a wildcard in the third class.

Marini is more than just a promising Moto3™ rider. At 16 years of age, he is standing out as a front-runner in the Italian CIV championship, having so far achieved six podium finishes from eight races to sit second in the standings. At Misano, he will take part in the action with Twelve Racing, under the watchful eye of Stefania Palma - mother to himself and Rossi.

“This is my second season in Moto3 (in the Italian championship) and I knew I could do well,” Marini tells “I am in a good team with good mechanics who have always given me a competitive bike. I am yet to have a win, which is all I need, but I will try for that at the final round at Mugello. The title will be very difficult now, but for as long as there is still a mathematical possibility I will continue to go for it.”

Comparing the national championships of Italy and Spain, following an outing in the latter at Albacete last weekend, Marini continues: “In terms of riders, both the CIV and CEV Repsol are very competitive. I have not noticed much difference, although maybe in the CEV there are more riders who are able to compete at the top. There is also a better technical level in Spain, since KTM is yet to arrive in the Italian championship but that does mean things are more evenly-matched between Honda and Mahindra.”

Furthermore, the Italian is fully aware of the opportunity that lies ahead of him this weekend. “So far I have always managed to overcome (the pressure of) these occasions, so it is sure to be a good experience,” Marini continues. “I hope to learn from the best and grow in all of the areas in which I need to. My brother tells me it is a great opportunity for me and I think I can do well. I just need to be very careful. I am very happy to have him as an advisor, though – I can’t really ask for more!”

Moto3™ will kick off the World Championship track action at Misano on Friday morning, as Free Practice 1 commences at 9am local time (GMT +2).
