Maverick Viñales led the way as Moto3™ practice kicked off the GP Aperol di San Marino e Riviera di Rimini weekend on Friday morning. The Team Calvo rider topped the timesheets from Mahindra Racing’s Efren Vazquez and Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3’s Jonas Folger, with championship leader Luis Salom seventh.
It was a bright morning on the Adriatic coast of Italy, with Viñales setting the pace with his best lap time of 1’44.311. This was just over two tenths of a second quicker than both Vazquez and Folger, while the top five was completed by Estrella Galicia 0,0s duo Alex Rins and Alex Marquez. The second Mahindra of Miguel Oliveira was sixth, while championship-leading Salom (Red Bull KTM Ajo and winner of the last two races) was within half a tenth of the quickest lap time.
San Carlo Team Italia's Romano Fenati and Francesco Bagnaia hit trouble, while Luca Marini – the 16-year-old half-brother of nine-time champion Valentino Rossi – began his weekend in a promising 21st place for Twelve Racing. Fellow wildcard and Italian championship rider Andrea Locatelli was 27th on a Mahindra Racing bike. Second practice commences at 1:10pm local time (GMT +2).
