Espargaro quickest as Valencia action begins

Newly-crowned Moto2™ World Champion Pol Espargaro topped the timesheets as Friday morning marked the start of free practice for the GP Generali de la Comunitat Valenciana. Tuenti HP 40 teammate Tito Rabat was second while Tom Luthi completed the top three for Interwetten Paddock Moto2 Racing.

As morning headed towards afternoon at the Ricardo Tormo circuit, Espargaro - who picked up the title in Japan two weeks ago - set the pace with his best effort of 1’35.691.

Rabat was just eight hundreds of a second slower but suffered a crash at the final corner at the end of the session. With Luthi just under three tenths off the leading time, the rest of the top five was filled by NGM Mobile Forward Racing pairing Alex de Angelis and Simone Corsi. Sixth was Mike Kallio for Marc VDS Racing Team.

Kallio’s teammate Scott Redding, who in Australia suffered a fractured wrist which effectively ended his title hopes, was 23rd this morning while there was an early fall for QMMF Racing Team’s Rafid Topan Sucipto who completed the 34-rider timesheet. Back in action for the first time since Misano, Technomag carXpert’s Randy Krummenacher - who has been recovering from a neck problem - finished in a strong 14th place.

The clear blue skies are expected to remain in place all weekend-long, with Moto2™ Free Practice 2 beginning at 3:05pm local time (GMT +1).
