Antonelli opens account for 2013

Thursday, 6 June 2013

Niccolo Antonelli was boosted by his performance in last weekend’s Gran Premio d’Italia TIM, racking up his first 2013 points finish for GO&FUN Gresini Moto3.

The Italian rookie of last year had failed to finish any of the first quartet of 2013 races in Qatar, Texas, Spain and France, meaning his Mugello result came as a relief as much as anything else – not least as it was delivered in front of his home crowd.

“First of all I was happy just to finish the race because that was the first target,” said the 17-year-old from Cattolica. “I tried to stay with the lead group but I was losing too much to them down the straight and it was impossible, so I just did my best to make sure of seventh place which is still a good result for us.

“Unfortunately we have seen just how much we are conceding to our rivals here, in terms of engine performance, but we know we have a good chassis so we have to look to the future and hope that Honda can give us some help soon.”

The team stayed on in Mugello for a single day of testing on Tuesday, during which it focused on engine upgrades in a bid to increase horsepower.
