Bautista plans cautious opening lap

Alvaro Bautista believes he is capable of making progress from eighth on the grid at Misano, but insists that he will not be taking risks on the opening lap.

12 months ago, Spaniard Bautista claimed his maiden MotoGP™ podium finish from fifth on the grid at Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli - a highly emotional result for all in his team. He will line up eighth at the start on Sunday.

“Today we improved yesterday’s settings a little bit,” the GO&FUN Gresini rider explained to motogp.com during a video interview. “When the grip really comes in, our rhythm is quite good – especially in FP4, in which we made a small change to the bike and I felt much better and that it was good with the used tyre.

“In qualifying, I wasn’t able to do a good lap time…sometimes it doesn’t come. I wasn’t able to do a good lap today; I found some traffic at the beginning and towards the end I improved just a little bit, but not enough.”

He went on to talk about possibilities on race day:

“I am confident for tomorrow’s race because our pace is good. The problem is that this track is not so big and it is difficult to overtake on the first lap. I will try to gain the maximum number of positions possible, but always without taking any risks.”

Championship-wise, Bautista is placed seventh overall, having jumped ahead of Ducati Team’s Andrea Dovizioso. The next target is LCR Honda MotoGP’s Stefan Bradl, who is ten points ahead and will start Sunday’s race on the same grid row.
