Binder: Getting 1st was an awesome way to end the Season

Monday, 19 November 2012

Brad Binder went into the final round of the CEV Buckler Moto3 Championship with the main aim to test his new Suter Honda for next year.

Brad and the Suter immediately gelled, with Brad in the top five of the timing sheets from the start of the weekend. This, along with Brad’s stellar 4th place in Valencia a week ago, gave him near limitless confidence for the rest of the weekend.

Brad carried his confidence on the new machine into qualifying. He just missed out on pole by .08 of a second to fellow Moto3 Rookie Niccolo Antonelli. His time was over a second faster than his qualifying time for the last Moto3 race, and on a brand new chassis and engine. Having felt very comfortable on the bike and with the Team all weekend Brad decided that he’d push it even harder come race day, hungrier than ever for a strong result.

Sunday came around and Brad was more than ready for the race to start. When the bikes did finally roll up onto the grid Brad sat and waited, just thinking about the first corner. When the lights went out Brad got off to a great start, following Aussie - Arthur Sissis and Italian - Antonelli around for the first few laps. Unfortunately Arthur crashed out, causing Brad and Antonelli to pull away from the others. Just .3 seconds behind Antonelli, Brad was slowly gaining, putting in a series of very consistent laps. Halfway through the race Antonelli slid off, leaving Brad in the lead by 3 seconds with Belgian youngster Livio Loi setting similar lap times but unable to gain any considerable ground.

Winning by over 5 seconds, Brad was ecstatic. Fellow South African Steve Odendaal, along with the team and many others were there to congratulate Brad. You couldn’t stop Brad smiling as he stood on the podium. If this race is anything to go by then it looks as though Brad, the Suter-Honda and the World Wide Communication Team are in for a very decent season next year in the Moto3.
