Crutchlow ‘really happy’ with fourth on grid
Saturday, 20 April 2013

He may have missed out on the front row of the grid by just under two tenths of a second, but Cal Crutchlow was highly pleased to have sealed fourth position for the start of Sunday’s inaugural Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas.

Second on the grid in Qatar a fortnight ago, Crutchlow this time starts two places further back. However, he successfully out-qualified both LCR Honda MotoGP’s Stefan Bradl and Yamaha Factory Racing’s Valentino Rossi, who had both conducted a three-day test at Circuit of the Americas a month ago.

"I am really happy to qualify in fourth, even though it would have been nice to be back on the front row again," said the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider. "But coming here with no previous track experience meant it was always going to be an uphill battle, so to finish so close to Lorenzo and be ahead of Bradl and Valentino - who both tested here last month - is a great achievement for myself and the team.

"It will be a really tough race and very physical for 21 laps but, having come here without any prior track knowledge, I always said a top six finish will be ‘mission accomplished’ for me - and that remains my goal."

Rookie teammate Bradley Smith will start 11th on Sunday, having once again passed through to the Q2 phase of the qualifying session.
