Monday, 18 March 2013

It was 2010 Moto2™ World Champion Toni Elías who topped the timesheets as pre-season testing resumed at Jerez on Monday. The Blusens Avintia rider moved ahead of earlier pace-setter Esteve Rabat by 59 thousandths of a second, while his Tuenti HP 40 teammate Pol Espargaró rounded out the top three.

With all-blue skies on offer, the weather was in stark contrast to that witnessed at the previous Jerez test, when rain and fog had affected two of the three days on offer. However, today’s calm off-track did not apply on it, as surface temperatures hit 35 degrees Celsius and riders racked up the kilometres; a sense of urgency was fuelled by a strong threat of showers for Tuesday.

Moving atop the classification in the final part of the day, Elías led the way with his best effort of 1’43.365. Behind the Tuenti duo and just outside the top three were another pair of bikes, as Takaaki Nakagami and Julián Simón finished fourth and fifth quickest for Italtrans Racing Team. Sixth was Mika Kallio for Marc VDS Racing Team, with just over four tenths of a second separating that leading group.

This test was always set to be significant, as the entire Moto2 grid was running for the first time with 2013’s official specification Honda 600cc engine. Furthermore, the riders were on this occasion limited to 56 laps until the second afternoon, by which time new engines will be in place and the previous units sent off to be race-prepared for the season-opening event in Qatar on 7 April.

In seventh place was Alex de Angelis for NGM Mobile Forward Racing, also sealing his position as the leading Speed Up representative. Aspar Team Moto2’s Nico Terol, Came IodaRacing Project’s Johann Zarco and Desguaces La Torre Zelos’ Xavier Simeon completed the top ten.

27th placed Louis Rossi was a faller, with the Frenchman losing control of his Tech 3 machine at Turn 4; although the bike was heavily damaged, the 23-year-old from Le Mans was able to walk away unharmed. As will be the case on all four days of testing this week, Moto2 both shared the circuit with sister series Moto3 as well as both series enjoying individual track time.

Jerez testing continues on Tuesday for the first full day of the week, with bikes set to be on-track between 10am and 6pm local time (CET).
