Folger makes the most of red flag situation

Tuesday, 23 April 2013

Jonas Folger was quick to admit that the stoppage of Sunday’s Moto3™ race in Texas was of great benefit to himself and Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3. The German, who finished fourth in the eventual five-lap dash to the finish line, has been able to reconfigure his machine.

The race was stopped when Dutchman Jasper Iwema suffered a heavy accident which left him unconscious for two minutes. He is now recovering, having been taken to hospital in Austin via the Circuit of the Americas Medical Centre.

“During the weekend we found it quite hard to adapt to Circuit of the Americas,” the German began to enlighten. “Despite this, we never stopped fighting in any of the practice sessions - nor in the race. I have to admit that the break in the race benefitted us because it allowed me to give some useful information to my team to make chances.

“With that, we took a step forward. In the end I finished fourth and it was a shame I could not fight for the podium. We must be satisfied that we again took a lot of points, despite our problems. At the end of the weekend we improved our performance.

“I tried to give my best in both of the two parts, but perhaps in the second I made a few mistakes when trying to stop the group from breaking away. That meant I couldn't stick with Viñales until the final lap. Obviously we would have liked to have fought for the podium, but in Jerez I am sure that we will have a better weekend.”

Two races into the new campaign, the Moto3™ championship is headed up by Estrella Galicia 0,0’s Alex Rins. Folger is placed fourth overall, 17 points in arrears.
