Khairuddin to race at Sepang after operation

Tuesday, 1 October 2013

Having suffered a crash in the closing stages of Sunday’s Moto3™ race at MotorLand Aragón, Zulfahmi Khairuddin underwent a successful operation in Barcelona on Tuesday. To his great relief, he will be able to compete in his upcoming home event in Malaysia.

Having been diagnosed with a small fracture to his right wrist following a collision with Efren Vazquez (Mahindra Racing), Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Khairuddin remained in Spain after Sunday’s race in order to visit Barcelona’s Quiron Dexeus University Hospital where he was attended to by Dr. Xavier Mir. An arthroscopic procedure involved the securing of the fractured bone with titanium screws.

“The operation went very well,” Dr. Mir confirmed. “Fahmi had a fractured radius of his right wrist and we were able to secure the bone with a double fixation, using titanium screws. We think that we have done a good job. He also has a fractured fourth metacarpus of the left hand, but as there is no dislocation he will not require surgery for that. If he were a normal person, I would say that he would be out for a few weeks, but I have seen the determination that he has and I am sure that he will be ready to do well at the Malaysian Grand Prix.”

A star performer at Sepang last year, missing out on the win by only 28 thousandths of a second, Khairuddin was highly keen to ensure that he would not be skipping his home event in 2013.

“These haven’t been the easiest of days because after the crash at MotorLand I feared the worst,” he admits. “However, the doctors told me that there was a chance that I could undergo surgery and still be fit for my home race at Sepang in a fortnight’s time.

“I have to thank the medical team for their treatment and for everything that they have done for me. I am still sore - above my back - but now I can’t wait to fly to Malaysia and begin my rehabilitation. I am very excited about riding in front of my family, friends and home fans. It is a race for which I have been waiting all year.”

Opening practice for next weekend’s Shell Advance Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix will commence on the morning of Friday 11 October, meaning Khairuddin - who will celebrate his 22nd birthday later this month - now has nine days over which to rest his wrist.
