Marco Simoncelli Monument unveiled in Coriano

Marco Simoncelli Monument unveiled in Coriano
Friday, 13 September 2013

MotoGP™ took a moment to reflect on Thursday night, as riders and officials gathered to unveiled the Marco Simoncelli Monument in his hometown of Coriano.

The presentation was led by Lino Dainese, President of Dainese, in front of the Simoncelli family, Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta, Mayor of Coriano Mimma Spinelli and competitors such as current World Championship leader Marc Marquez.

The monument itself, shaped in the form of a motorcycle exhaust, will evoke memories of Simoncelli in dramatic fashion; every Sunday evening, a three metre-long flame will shoot out of the metal sculpture for 58 seconds.

"Sometimes I ask myself why there is so much love for Marco," Paulo Simoncelli, father of Marco, commented after addressing all at the ceremony. "Perhaps it was his honesty in interviews which meant that people began to love what he did on the track, not to mention his unusual voice or his curly hair! It’s a great idea and I want to thank Lino Dainese who strongly wanted it. I thank all who came here today for this event."

"Whenever something like this is organised, I like to be here because it is important," Repsol Honda Team’s Marquez explained. "Marco was such a great rider and I always had a good relationship with him, so whenever we have some kind of event like this I like to be here to meet the family - it is a pleasure for me."

During his short career, Simoncelli achieved 14 career Grand Prix victories, 15 pole positions and a total of 31 podium finishes. He was the 250 World Champion of 2008.
