Márquez conquers nerves to finish fourth
Thursday, 4 April 2013

Marc Márquez enjoyed a strong start to his MotoGP™ career under lights in Qatar on Thursday night, rounding out the opening practice session of 2013 as the quickest Repsol Honda Team rider. However, he admits to being nervous at first.

The Spaniard, who celebrated his 20th birthday in February, steps up to the top tier of the sport following a dominant Moto2™ season in 2012. His best effort of Thursday was 1’57.276, which was just under six tenths of a second off the top spot but half a second quicker than more experience teammate Dani Pedrosa. However, lap times will come down on Friday as the desert track continues to clean up.

“I’m quite happy because we started well from the beginning,” Márquez told motogp.com in the Losail paddock. “The grip levels here in Qatar aren’t perfect but step-by-step I tried to find the best setup, tried to work always thinking about the race and at the moment we still need to work a lot. I know the grip will be better tomorrow and every rider will be faster. We need to keep that level and concentrate on our work, but I think we have started pretty well.

“If I’m being honest, I was a little bit nervous…especially at the beginning when I went out. It felt a bit strange on the bike on the first lap, but after that I just tried to ride like I did during the pre-season and everything was fine.”

As Marc Márquez debuted in MotoGP™, brother Álex was in action on a Moto3™ bike and ended his evening fourth in class.
