Pol Espargaro not fazed by MotoGP™ talk

Pol Espargaro insists he will not allow thoughts of a MotoGP™ class ride to remove the focus from his current task of attempting to win the Moto2™ title.

The younger brother of Aleix Espargaro was a Moto2 title favourite heading into 2013 and currently sits 11 points away from the championship lead. Earlier this week, Herve Poncharal (Team Manager for Monster Yamaha Tech 3) hinted to motogp.com that Cal Crutchlow could be replaced by the younger Espargaro next year, depending on Yamaha’s final decision.

"That Yamaha and Espargaro have spoken is a certainty," Poncharal said. "He is one of the most talented young riders in Moto2. Personally, I have never talked to Espargaro on behalf of Tech 3…what I do know is that Yamaha has four bikes and, when Cal Crutchlow is the only rider who is contracted only for this year, some think Espargaro could take his place."

The rider in question - currently riding in Moto2 for Tuenti HP 40 - confirms that he is aware of the rumours but insists that they have not been received as a disturbance to his current programme.

"No, not yet," he told motogp.com, when asked if the rumours served as a distraction during a pre-Le Mans rider gathering in Disneyland Paris. "We have only had three races and the MotoGP dream is still far (ahead) for me. We have to focus 100% on Moto2 this year, I think that’s the important thing.

"They’re talking a lot about MotoGP, but I don’t want that to distract me. We will see what happens in the middle of the season and at the end of the season, which is one of the most important of my life. So I don’t want that to be a distraction and we need to continue with the job in hand in Moto2; I have had one win, one fall and one third place, but it’s looking good for Le Mans."

Crutchlow signed a one-year extension to his Tech 3 deal for 2013, having originally elected to leave the outfit for Ducati Team which ultimately decided to hire Crutchlow’s former teammate Andrea Dovizioso. Tech 3’s other current MotoGP™ rider, newcomer Bradley Smith, is contracted to the team until the end of the 2014 campaign.
