A new leader travels to The Netherlands

Monday, 24 June 2013

Just as it seemed as though the pre-season title favourite may have got his season back on track, Maverick Viñales has lost the championship lead. Heading to the Dutch TT at Assen, it is on song fellow countryman Luis Salom who heads the Moto3™ standings.

Just looking at the facts of the season so far, one would perhaps be considered either brave or stupid to write off Salom. After all, the Red Bull KTM Ajo rider is the first to have won three races – one of which came in Qatar, perhaps to serve as an early warning. Two victories in a row at Mugello and the Circuit de Catalunya have now very much thrown him back into contention atop the title race.

Team Calvo’s Viñales has 122 points to his name which means he trails his compatriot by just five. Perhaps comfortingly for the former, the chasing Alex Rins (Estrella Galicia 0,0) is a further 21 in arrears, whereas Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3’s Jonas Folger is the only rider inside the top five without full KTM machinery. Now it’s all about damage limitation, with the German having skipped Barcelona after injuring his right wrist in a motocross accident after the Italian Grand Prix.

Will historic Assen be the scene of a momentous first podium for Mahindra Racing? Miguel Oliveira and Efren Vazquez have taken turns to shine over the past month, very much raising the optimism of CEO Mufaddal Choonia and all involved in the Indian operation which has future aspirations of MotoGP title wins. Perhaps hoping to mix it up will be Dutch wildcard entrants Bryan Schouten and Thomas van Leeuwen, riding for the respective Dutch Racing Team and Racing Team van Leeuwen.
