Puig explains rider selection process for Shell Advance Asia Talent Cup
Monday, 14 October 2013

On Monday, the selection process began for the Shell Advance Asia Talent Cup, taking place at the Sepang International Circuit.

The riders present were tasked with riding 125cc Honda Underbone motorcycles at the Sepang karting circuit. Those selected from their heats of Monday, plus another group from Tuesday, will then proceed to a shootout on Tuesday afternoon. It is from that shootout that the final 22 names will be selected ahead of competing in the inaugural Shell Advance Asia Talent Cup of 2014.

"Every rider had three heats of 15 minutes in order to have time to understand the track and the bike," explains Talent Scout Alberto Puig. "We had riders from many countries and it was nice to see how they were improving the lap times heat by heat. It was a good test and we were happy with it."

Asked how he will eventually decide which 22 riders will be chosen, Puig explains:

"This is very difficult to answer. You go out on-track looking, but to be honest there is no science in this. It is just your own perception of the situation after watching the riders many times; it is based on your intuition and of course on the lap times, which help us a lot.

"If the lap times are more or less on the same level as our thoughts when we are watching out on-track, you have the perfect combination."

In 2014, the Shell Advance Asia Talent Cup will see its 22 riders competing for glory as they race in Qatar, Indonesia, China, Japan, Malaysia and India.
