Argiñano & Gines Racing has announced that Gino Rea will cover for Alberto Moncayo across the upcoming ‘flyaway’ races in Malaysia, Australia and Japan.

With Moncayo having suffered a knee injury in a training accident last week, the Spaniard has been put out of action and as a result will miss the trio of back-to-back Grands Prix at Sepang, Phillip Island and Motegi. This means Rea will be making three unexpected appearances, having so far this season competed in seven events as an independent wildcard entry with his own team.

“I am very thankful to the AGR team for this opportunity as it keeps me racing and in the Moto2™ paddock for the flyaway races,” Rea comments. “I am really excited to work with this team and I will be giving it my all to bring them some strong results. This will be a challenging experience for me, riding for a new team and on a different chassis, the Speed Up, for the first time at a race weekend. I have demonstrated this year that I can learn fast and I hope to adapt quickly to the bike and team.”

“It was a stroke of bad luck for Alberto,” adds Team Manager Iker Burutxaga. “The most important thing now is to make a full recovery. This mishap has forced us to act quickly and we were able to enlist the services of Gino Rea, who is fresh from competing in Aragón; he also knows Sepang and finished on the podium last year.”

Rea will partner regular Argiñano & Gines Racing Moto2™ rider Steven Odendaal.
