Redding thoroughly enjoys battle with Espargaró
Monday, 8 April 2013

Britain’s Scott Redding raced to second place in Sunday’s season-opening Moto2™ race, being passed by Pol Espargaró before chasing the Spaniard to the finish line.

Having made a strong start and fighting into third place at Turn 2 in Qatar, Marc VDS Racing Team’s Redding proceeded to overtake both Tuenti HP 40’s Espargaró and Italtrans Racing Team’s Takaaki Nakagami, who would finish third. Espargaró then slotted into second and would go on to take the top spot away from the Englishman.

"I wasn’t planning on leading the race!" Redding told motogp.com in an exclusive video interview. "I had a problem with the clutch on the warm-up lap and struggled with that, but the team fixed it.

"I got a good rhythm, so I thought I would take the lead and make some progress. Then Pol was just slowly, slowly getting closer and closer and I was struggling with chatter on the front. When he passed me he didn’t have so much speed and I was able to stay with him.

"On the last lap I made a strong move and we came a bit together, but that was racing and now I’m looking forward to the next race. I love a new track in Texas and it looks pretty mega."

Last year, Redding finished fifth overall in Moto2™ with four podiums to his name.
