Rins overwhelmed to seize first career win

Rins overwhelmed to seize first career win

Sunday’s Moto3™ race for the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas was a highly dramatic affair, broken up into two segments because of a red flag. Alex Rins triumphed for the first time after a superb battle with a pair of fellow KTM riders.

Riding for Estrella Galicia 0,0, Rins had stormed to a dominant pole position on Saturday. He proceeded to pull away at the start of Sunday’s race, but lost the advantage to Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Luis Salom as the action resumed with a restarted, five-lap sprint to the flag. The battle would rage until the last corner, when Salom overtook but ran wide as Rins judged his line to perfection. Maverick Viñales seized second for Team Calvo in the very last knockings.

“I’m so, so happy because this is my first win in the World Championship,” said the 17-year-old from Barcelona. “Thank you to all the team and the sponsors for bringing me this opportunity. During winter testing I had been very good in Jerez, as Salom and Viñales also had been. This weekend my team and I worked very hard and the second part of the race was very difficult because Salom braked harder than I did at the last corner – but I was able to hold on to first place.”

Two races into the new season, Rins is level on points atop the standings with Salom. The former is officially the new championship leader, as he is the most recent race winner.
