Smith thrilled by qualifying speed

Bradley Smith was delighted with his qualifying performance in France on Saturday, having set the ninth quickest lap time to be just over one second off pole position.

The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider is now aiming to stay as close to the leading group as possible in Sunday’s race at Le Mans, which could take place in wet conditions.

“I think the team has done an exceptional job this weekend,” the English rookie told motogp.com in an exclusive video interview. “In first practice we were looking a little bit shaky, but since then we have just been making huge improvements with every session.

“To be only one second behind is a huge improvement in comparison with the first three races. The main focus is to make a good start and be able to follow the guys in front of me to try and learn as much as possible. Riding with that type of level of riders will teach me a lot, so that is the plan.”

Smith could be the only Tech 3 rider competing in Sunday’s race, as there is a question mark over the participation of teammate Cal Crutchlow who suffered a knee injury in a heavy accident during the final practice session.
