Vazquez in top five on impressive return

Vazquez in top five on impressive return

Spain’s Efren Vazquez confirmed his Moto3™ comeback by sealing a top five finish in Sunday’s Catalan Grand Prix. The Basque Country rider had missed the previous French and Italian races due to a crash in practice at Le Mans which had left him with a broken right collarbone.

In Barcelona last weekend, Vazquez qualified sixth before battling in the action-packed front group and eventually crossing the finish line in fifth position.

"I am happy with this race because to fight in the first group is very important for the team and our performance this season," the 26-year-old told motogp.com. "We will see what happens in the rest of the season, but I am happy with the team and the setting of the bike was perfect this race.

"I need a little bit more time for my shoulder to completely recover, to arrive at Assen in a good condition. It was difficult because I’m not 100%. For three to six laps it is okay, but the rest of the race my physical condition was getting less and less, with more pain coming. I finished the race in fifth and not too far from the first group. I am happy with the result but unhappy with my performance."

Mahindra CEO Mufaddal Choonia was especially impressed by the performance:

"Hats off to him. He’s a real fighter. He came back in after the race in so much pain. We were really surprised how he finished the race, actually, and in fifth position; really, really commendable. A fantastic performance from him and a real fighter, I would say…we just want to keep our heads down, keep working and doing better, better, better. With that process, if we end up on the podium we won’t complain about it. The effort between Mahindra and Suter is really showing results."

In the previous race at Mugello, Vazquez’s teammate Miguel Oliveira collected Mahindra Racing’s best finish so far by taking the chequered flag in fourth place.

Vazquez has had a busy week and on Tuesday the rider and Mahindra officially presented their 2013 project to the press at a special event in Bilbao.

The rider commented, "Mahindra have given me the chance to develop a bike this year and for me that is a dream for every rider, just as it is to be a World Champion. I accepted the challenge as I wanted to realize my potential as a rider and a person."
