Capirossi: "Marquez is an amazing talent and can win title this year"

Wednesday, 5 June 2013

Following the recent Gran Premio d'Italia TIM, motogp.com caught up with MotoGP safety advisor and former World Champion Loris Capirossi - to get his perspective on an array of subjects.

The ex-125cc and 250cc title winner gave us his views on the exciting weekend’s action and the Monday Moto2 test at Mugello, the 2013 title fight, the fortunes of Marc Marquez and Valentino Rossi and the latest adventures of Max Biaggi.

motogp.com: Loris, you got involved in some Moto2 testing on Monday, what was the main aim?

Loris Capirossi: “In my career I’d never had the chance to ride a 600cc or Moto2 machine. I rode the 500cc and MotoGP bikes for 12 years so my first impression with the new Moto2 was that is was slow compared to them. On the other hand these new bikes are highly responsive racing machines so you get a good feeling from them. I did a few laps with the QMMF Speed Up, and then I wanted to try them all, Kalex, Suter, JiR, but unfortunately the weather did not help. At the end I did a couple of laps on the Gresini Suter and despite some poor track conditions it was great.”

What about Marc Marquez in MotoGP this season and his tough weekend at Mugello? Do you think he can win the title soon?

LC: “I back him because he has the winning spirit. He has a lot to learn but he’s already up with the top guys. Ok so he crashed too often at Mugello but he will have learned from that. It won’t be easy for him, but he has the potential to win the title this year. I would not be at all surprised if he were to win it.”

What’s you view on the battle between Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa, who do you think will come out on top?

LC: “I think that both Lorenzo and Pedrosa are in great shape. Lorenzo has great focus, but he now has a very hard rival in Pedrosa, who this year did something he has never done before, and started really well. If Pedrosa has his usual second half of the season, he will be difficult to beat. I think it’s evenly matched.”

Some people thought Lorenzo’s overtaking move on Pedrosa was somewhat controversial. How did you see it?

LC: “If Dani had continued on the same line they would have touched, but for me it was a normal overtake.”

On that subject what’s your view on the Alvaro Bautista and Valentino Rossi incident?

LC: “It’s really hard to analyze. On the first lap, Andrea Iannone slowed Bautista down a bit, Rossi spotted that Bautista had dropped and tried to overtake on the outside and at one point was already ahead. Bautista said he did not see Rossi at all. We reviewed the video to understand the situation, Valentino was clearly unlucky to be hit, but then it is difficult to blame anyone. In such a competitive category you can not afford to lose any ground on the first lap, they both knew that, and they tried to not lose it.”

Will Valentino win return to winning ways?

LC: “In this first part of season luck has not been on his side. The potential is there though because he is a great champion and I’m sure he will star in the rest of the season.”

Finally, Max Biaggi is set to test with Ducati this week at Mugello, what’s your view on that?

LC: “It makes me smile that he is doing that, but I’m happy for him. Let’s see what he can to do in a couple of days, it will not be easy, he is starting to get a bit old!”
