Reigning MotoGP™ World Champion Jorge Lorenzo topped the timesheets in opening practice for the Tissot Australian Grand Prix. The Yamaha Factory Racing rider lapped Phillip Island, with its new track surface, less than a tenth of a second quicker than championship leader Marc Marquez while Alvaro Bautista rounded out the top three.

Weather conditions were good as the 45-minute period began shortly before 11 o’clock, with Round 16 set to serve as the possible championship decider for rookie Marquez. However, it was the current title holder who registered the top lap time as Lorenzo posted 1’29.167, just 88 thousandths up on Repsol Honda Team’s Marquez, with Bautista a further half a second in arrears for GO&FUN Honda Gresini. The top five was completed by Dani Pedrosa and Valentino Rossi, respective teammates to Marquez and Lorenzo.

Stefan Bradl was given the all clear to ride, despite fracturing an ankle at Sepang last Saturday; ending the session 20th quickest and 3.9 seconds off the leading pace, it had already been confirmed that after the period he would undergo further medical checks in order to deem whether or not the LCR Honda MotoGP rider can continue participating this weekend. 11 positions in front of the German, the lead CRT representative was Randy de Puniet who ended the morning ninth fastest for Power Electronics Aspar.

Ignite Pramac Racing’s Yonny Hernandez suffered a fall just over ten minutes into the session, while there were brief off-track excursions for Monster Yamaha Tech3’s Bradley Smith, NGM Mobile Forward Racing’s Claudio Corti and the aforementioned Rossi. Free Practice 2 will be underway from 3:05pm local time (GMT +11).
