Japan’s Takaaki Nakagami topped the timesheets in a dry opening practice session for the Gran Premio d’Italia TIM. As dark clouds loomed large above Mugello, the Le Mans pole-sitter led Xavier Simeon, Pol Espargaro and championship leader Scott Redding.

Following heavy showers in Tuscany on Thursday, damp patches caught out several riders as the track action began on Friday morning. Italtrans Racing Team’s Nakagami set the pace with a 1’54.877 lap time, edging out Simeon (Desguaces La Torre Maptaq) by two tenths of a second as the timesheets featured various changes across the closing minutes. Espargaro (Tuenti HP 40) jumped ahead of Redding (Marc VDS Racing Team) by 22 thousandths of a second.

The second Tuenti bike of Esteve Rabat was fifth from NGM Mobile Forward Racing’s Alex de Angelis, as Technomag carXpert’s Randy Krummenacher and Dominique Aegerter sandwiched JiR Moto2’s Mike di Meglio and Interwetten Paddock Moto2’s Tom Luthi into eighth and ninth positions. Leading Italian rider Mattia Pasini missed out on the top ten by two tenths of a second.

Second practice for the Moto2™ field commences at 3:05pm local time (GMT +2).
