It was a rain-free start to the Iveco TT Assen weekend as Maverick Viñales led opening practice for the Moto3™ field. Riding for Team Calvo, the Figueres rider topped the timesheets from championship leader Luis Salom in an all-Spanish top three.

Viñales’ best lap came in the form of 1’44.247, edging out Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Salom by four tenths of a second. Behind Estrella Galicia 0,0’s Alex Rins, Niklas Ajo and Jonas Folger completed the top five for Avant Tecno and Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3, respectively. Rins’ teammate Alex Marquez finished sixth, with Dutch wildcards Bryan Schouten and Thomas van Leeuwen 11th and 24th.

The track remained dry throughout the session, but dark clouds loomed above the historic venue and several forecasters continue to predict that rain will fall. Moto3™ will continue with second free practice, also lasting for 40 minutes and starting at 1:10pm local time (GMT +2).
