Jorge Lorenzo was quickest in Friday morning’s opening practice for the Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya. Last year’s winner set a best lap time of 1’42.422 for Yamaha Factory Racing, with both Repsol Honda Team’s Dani Pedrosa and Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Cal Crutchlow less than one tenth of a second slower.

On an ever warming morning at the Montmelo-based venue on the outskirts of Barcelona, Lorenzo – winner of the last Grand Prix in Italy and Catalunya victor of both 2010 and 2012 – was just 23 thousandths of a second quicker than championship leader Pedrosa, with Britain’s Crutchlow only another 47 thousandths in arrears. Valentino Rossi and Andrea Dovizioso completed the top five for Yamaha Factory Racing and Ducati Team, respectively.

No less than five riders ran into the gravel at the La Caixa hairpin entering the stadium, as Andrea Iannone (Energy T.I. Pramac Racing), the aforementioned Pedrosa, Aleix Espargaro (Power Electronics Aspar), Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team) and Lukas Pesek (Came IodaRacing Project) all suffered off-track excursions. There was a bigger moment for GO&FUN Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista, who fell from his bike and slid into the run-off area at Turn 1. The Spaniard walked away.

Second practice will start at 2:05pm local time (GMT +2).
