Oliveira misses podium but remains upbeat

oliveira assen race review
Monday, 1 July 2013

Miguel Oliveira finished fourth in the Moto3™ Iveco TT Assen, having started from Mahindra Racing’s first ever pole position in the first.

The qualifying result was the second in Mahindra’s short history but the first in Moto3, whereas Oliveira impressively became the first Portuguese rider to claim pole across any class in the history of the MotoGP™ World Championship.

"I’m not disappointed," Oliveira commented. "I think we’ve done everything we could; we had pole position and the fastest lap of the race. It’s just a little bit frustrating not getting to the podium after the work that we have done but, anyway, I am happy with the performance of the bike and with my performance.

"I am happy for the team. We deserve a little bit better, but we need to work against Spanish riders and the factory; so it’s not easy, but this result gives us motivation to keep up with it at the next race."

Looking ahead to the next race in Germany, he sums up:

"I’m not sure whether we can do better than this. The Sachsenring is a particular circuit because it has a lot of climbs, so the engine there is quite important. We don’t know how much this lack of power or torque (in comparison with rivals) will effect us at that circuit, but we will keep fighting."

Oliveira is sixth in the Moto3™ standings and the leading rider not to be equipped with either a bike or engine entered by KTM.
