Luis Salom defended his championship lead in the Moto3™ Aragón Grand Prix, but saw it reduce to nine points as he climbed to fourth place from eighth on the grid. However, both title rivals Alex Rins and Maverick Viñales finished in front of him.

While Rins (Estrella Galicia 0,0) took the chequered flag from Viñales (Team Calvo) and teammate Alex Marquez, Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Salom recovered four positions but admitted that he would not have been able to challenge at the very forefront.

“This is the best result we could get,” Salom began. “I tried everything. (In qualifying) we lacked feeling a little bit…we lacked something. In the Warm-Up, we improved a little bit and then again in the race, but it was not enough to be there.

“Together with my team, we have done our best this weekend and this was the best result possible. For sure, I would take this: to be first in the championship and always fighting with four races before the end. I hope to be stronger and to be there again in Malaysia.”

Just four races remain in the 2013 season. On 12 October the Malaysian Grand Prix will kick-off a triple-header completed by Australia and Japan, with the season meeting its climax at Valencia’s Ricardo Tormo circuit on 10th November.
