Moto3™ championship leader Luis Salom set the pace as Friday morning marked opening practice for the Tissot Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island. The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider topped the timesheets from Jonas Folger and Zulfahmi Khairuddin.

With a bright morning on the southern Australian island, Salom posted the best ever Moto3™ lap of 1’38.332 by 45 thousandths of a second, assisted by the smoother new track surface which has been laid since last year’s event. Having won at Sepang only five days earlier, the Mallorcan edged out Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3’s Folger and Red Bull KTM Ajo teammate Khairuddin, back in action after missing his home race through injury.

A number of riders hit trouble. Both Australian wildcards, Lachlan Kavney (Bullet Racing) and Callum Barker (Barker – McVey Racing), suffered slip-ups during the first 15 minutes as did compatriot Arthur Sissis, teammate to Salom and Khairuddin who crashed at Doohan Corner. Turn 1 would also be the scene of an upset for title challenger Maverick Viñales, who lost control of his Team Calvo bike before sliding across the grass. John McPhee hit trouble at the MG hairpin, whereas Luca Grunwald – covering for Florian Alt at Kiefer Racing – highsided as the chequered flag came out. Hafiq Azmi also took part in the session for La Fonte Tascaracing, in place of Alessandro Tonucci who suffered a broken wrist last time out.

Moto3™ continues with second practice from 2:10pm local time (GMT +11).
